About the Seminar

The ASA and British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC), the National Governing Body for Underwater Swimming in the UK, are working in partnership to introduce snorkelling to children who are already learning to swim. 

This seminar takes a 'blended learning' format and is designed to equip ASA level 2 qualified swimming teachers with the additional skills required to deliver BSAC’s Dolphin Snorkeller course.

Once this seminar has taken place, you will be able to deliver the Dolphin Snorkeller in a pool environment to swimmers as part of their Learn to Swim scheme under stages 8, 9 & 10 of the Aquatic Skills Framework. You do not have to hold any other formal qualification.

The Guided Learning Hours for this seminar is 7.5 hours – this is a combination of up to 3 hours online learning (including reading) followed by a 4.5 hour practical session

Format of the Seminar

Prior to the practical session, the Dolphin Snorkeller seminar requires learners to complete an online theory element, which incorporates materials supplied by BSAC.  Online materials are supported by the BSAC produced guides which will enable the learner to understand the basics of being a Dolphin Snorkeller participant and the theory behind becoming an instructor.

The online materials consist of 'Go Snorkelling' and 'Instructing Snorkelling'and include:

  • Equipment and Signals
  • Some Science
  • Safe Snorkelling
  • Teaching Practical Skills
  • Keeping it Safe and Fun
  • Theory knowledge review
  • Summary

Learning activities are incorporated throughout the online learning, which check learning and understanding, and is followed by a theory quiz which assesses your competency.

Learners who demonstrate their understanding of the online materials and complete them, then attend a face to face practical/theory session in a pool environment.

Having booked and paid to attend the seminar you will be granted access to the online learning, where you will be able to download the following Manuals:

The materials are accessible from the online learning under the 'resources' tab on the top right, please ensure you read these manuals alongside your online learning prior to attneding the practical session. 

Attendees will be required to get into the pool on the practical session.

Suitable swimwear is required. It is strongly recomended  to bring a wetsuit and/or rash vest if you have one.

Snorkelling equipment will be provided on the day however there will be limited numbers of a variety of sizes. If you do own your own equipment you may wish to bring this with you on the day, however this will be at your own risk.

Fitness for Snorkelling

Snorkel diving, whether in a swimming pool or in open water, is an activity which requires general physical fitness and good health.

Anyone with a history of diabetes, black-outs (epilepsy, etc.) perforated eardrums, grommets, high blood pressure or heart disease is advised to seek advice from a specialist (UK Sport Diving Medical Committee) Referee. See www.uksdmc.co.uk

Should there be any change in your health, you are advised to seek an informed medical opinion concerning current fitness for snorkelling.

**Important Information About Your Online Learning**

You can choose to complete the online learning at any point having booked and paid for the CPD. The IoS will make viability checks 2 weeks in advance of the practical session, where every effort will be made to try and ensure the semianr runs, we would ask that you bear this in mind. Should the face to face date need to be cancelled and you have already completed the online learning, you will not be required to repeat this if you rebook. 

How to access the learning

Once you have booked and paid for the seminar, you can access the learning immediately - please log into your account and click on 'My IoS'>'My Courses'>'Online Learning'>'Upcoming' and then click on the title of the seminar

How long do I have to complete the learning?

The online learning must be completed at least 48 hours prior to the face to face date. You should not attend the face to face element of the seminar without having completed this. You will not be certificated for the seminar without having completed both the online and the face to face elements and further charges will apply if you wish to complete the online learning after the face to face date.

Once you have completed the online learning it will move from 'Upcoming' into 'Completed' on your IoS online profile. You will be certificated once we have confirmation from the presenter of your attendance on the face to face date.

Prerequisites

There are no formal pre-requisites for this seminar, it is however, aimed at Level 2 Swimming Teachers and School Swimming Teachers (or volunteers who have completed the national curriculum seminars)

Practical session outcomes:

  • Be able to fit fins
  • Understand the key features of a face mask and be able to correctly fit and clear it on the surface
  • Be able to correctly fit and clear a snorkel by blowing
  • Be comfortable breathing from a snorkel whilst floating face down on the surface
  • Be comfortable finning forwards, stopping and turning around whilst breathing from a snorkel
  • Attempt surface dives – optional depending on student confidence
  • Understand that an ‘OK’ signal is a question and answer
  • Understand that, if going on holiday and snorkelling
  • Stay shallow - you are a beginner
  • Don’t touch marine life
  • Always have someone watching you and make sure you can always see them
  • Remember body protection, particularly if snorkelling in hot sunshine – t-shirt, hat
