RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) is “A method of assessment that considers whether a learner can demonstrate that they can meet the assessment requirements for a unit through knowledge, understanding or skills they already posses and do not need to develop through a course of learning” .

It is one of many delivery methods to achieve your ASA Level 1 Swimming Assistant (Teaching) qualification.

In simple terms it is a programme which assesses you against the current ASA qualifications taking into account previous qualifications and teaching/coaching experience.

If you have any queries regarding RPL please contact the team on

Format and process: Applicants are required to complete all e-learning / theory questions and these MUST be completed ahead of your practical assessment and within the time-frame specified by your allocated assessor. Failure to do so will incur additional costs or result in you being deemed as ‘Not Yet Competent’ which will lead to alternative options being provided to you.

Assessment: A dedicated Assessor will be linked to you and will review evidence submitted against the ASA qualification criteria. You will complete a set of theory questions to show knowledge and understanding, and you will then be required to submit two videos showing your ability to assist in and out of the water. If there are any outstanding criteria you may also have a Professional Discussion with your assessor.

Final assessment decisions remain with the assessor but are open to both internal and external verification as part of the IoS quality procedures.

To complete the RPL process you will be given 4 weeks to send through all of the evidence needed to gain your qualifications.
