You must be at least 16 years of age at the start of the course.

Before booking onto this programme you MUST meet the following pre-requisites:
  • You must be at least 16 years of age
  • You will be experienced at working at assistant coach level
  • You must have a good level of English written and verbal communication skills
  • You must be able to provide video footage of you assisting coaching with swimmers who are at county level or above

RPL - Swim England Swimming Assistant (Coaching) Certificate


This is an assessment only route to a Swim England certificate which means that candidates do not need any tutor-led support, mentoring, delivery or learning resources.

Candidates will have a limited time to produce all of the evidence for assessment and must be able to do this independently, by interpreting the specifications of the programme. Once enrolled onto the programme, no refunds will be issued if candidates find that it is not suitable for them. If you would like to understand more about the RPL method of assessment please send your query to PRIOR to booking if you are unsure.

If you decide to book onto this programme you MUST have obtained permission, beforehand, to undertake video filming of your coaching delivery. By enrolling onto this programme you are declaring that this is in place.

You will be allowed access to the online workbook once you have booked onto the programme and this should be completed within the first week of your booking date.

You will have a maximum of 4 weeks to upload all of your evidence.

The RPL (recognition of prior learning) is an assessment only process which assumes that you already possess all of the necessary knowledge and skills to perform as a swimming coach. It is aimed at those who are already operating as an assistant coach in swimming but do not hold a current qualification or certificate. By enrolling onto this programme you are confirming that you are able to operate as a coach, and be able to provide video footage of you assisting coaching with swimmers who are at county level and above.  

You will need to evidence your knowledge in respect of:

  • Know about the role of the swimming assistant (coaching)
  • Know about the legal aspects of assisting in coaching swimming
  • Know about the structure of swimming inc role of Swim England/British Swimming; swimmer pathways; club governance; the role of coach bodies; para swimming
  • Know about the importance of positive coaching behaviour
  • Know about the role of the swimming assistant (coaching) in promoting swimming
  • Know about physical literacy in swimming
  • Know about competitive swimming skills
  • Know about para swimming
  • Know about types of training used to develop swimmers
  • Know the key components of swimming session plans
  • Know about swimming equipment
  • Be able to deliver pre-planned coaching sessions
  • Be able to carry out reflective practices of your coaching
  • Know about professional development opportunities
You will be assessed by your dedicated assessor once you have uploaded the appropriate evidence onto our online portal. This evidence will include plans, evaluations, video's and completion of online theory questions.
