Prerequisites

You must be at least 19 years of age at the start of the course.

The Swim England Senior Swimming Coach Certificate has replaced the ASA Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Swimming.

Applicants must hold an ASA Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Swimming or Swim England Swimming Coach Certificate, and have over 12 months experience as a swimming coach.

Other Requirements:

You must be:

  • Coaching at a SwimMark accredited club. Those who are not currently at a SwimMark accredited club but meet all other criteria may be considered but further information will be requested on application.
  • Currently coaching for a minimum of 6 hours per week.
  • Leading the coaching of a whole group/squad of swimmers for the programme duration. Swimmers should be competing at regional championships or above. Those who are not coaching swimmers at this level may be considered but further information will be requested on application.

It is recommended that you hold an up to date DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.

Please do not register if you cannot guarantee the appropriate environment needed to undertake the learning and produce evidence. Background checks will be completed as part of the screening process. If you are not able to access the appropriate environment, you will not be eligible to undertake the programme.

Details

This is the application stage of the Swim England Senior Swimming Coach Course only.

To be considered for this course you need to book on and upload your evidence of meeting the prerequisites above. This does not guarantee a place on the Senior Coach programme.

Your application needs to include evidence of coaching (via a CV), role within the club (role description) and a letter from the club chairperson to support the application.

All evidence must be submitted via PebblePad by the 1st September 2017 in order to be considered for the programme.

How to upload your evidence:

  1. Log onto your IoS Online account
  2. Select 'My IoS'
  3. Select 'Personal Learning Space' which will take you through to PebblePad
  4. Once in PebblePad, select the four white squares on the top right corner. It will then automatically search for your workbook, once it comes up please select it.

Access to the workbook for uploading evidence may take up to 24hrs.

Description

The Swim England Senior Coach Certificate will give you the knowledge and skills to effectively plan, deliver and evaluate a macro cycle of work. As a senior coach you will be able to lead a coaching team and manage resources to support all areas of a swimming club or squad programme.

The programme will allow you to:

  • Develop your confidence, communication and inter personal skills
  • Identify the principles of coaching in a development or performance environment
  • Develop an awareness of your professional role and responsibilities
  • Adopt an integrated approach to the theory and practice of performance swimming
  • Reflect on your experience and skills, and identify areas for personal development.

 

Key dates:

The programme will commence with an Induction day followed by the 1st of 3 learning days at Swim England office, Loughborough, Leicestershire on the 18th and 19th November 2017. If you cannot attend this weekend please do not apply.

18th November 2017 – Induction day

19th November 2017 – 1st Learning day

17th or 18th February 2018 – 2nd Learning day

14th or 15th April 2018 – 3rd Learning day

These workshops will cover key topics relating to Swim England Senior Coach Certificate content.  You need to attend one day in February and one day in April. Spaces will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.

 

Structure of the programme

The Senior Coach Certificate is designed to be completed within 9 months. You must be able to manage your time to meet individual deadlines.

Once accepted on to the programme you will be assigned a mentor. Your mentor will provide support via 'WebEx' or 'Skype' sessions and will visit you at your home club and at a competition to carry out observations. You mentor will also assess theoretical work which is completed and submitted online using our e-portfolio system 'PebblePad'.

Please ensure you have sufficient time to commit to completing the programme within the set 9 months prior to completing this application stage.

 

Programme costs

The Senior Coach Programme is £2100. This includes Dinner, Bed and breakfast for the 18th November night in Loughborough. The full amount is payable in October once notification of acceptance onto the programme is received. There is no cost for this application.

Assessment

In order to achieve this certificate you will be expected to complete a series of assessment tasks to ensure that effective learning has taken place.

Assessment will be via a combination of methods such as observation, theoretical questions, professional discussion, and by producing planning cycles relevant to the role. This will not commence until you are formally accepted onto the programme.

For this application stage you will be required to upload electronic copies of your pre-requisite information onto PebblePad.

All applications will be examined and a shortlist of coaches will be selected. Shortlisting will take place following the closing date and applicants will be informed if they have a place in early October.

If you do not have all of the pre-requisites listed above you are currently not eligible to register for the Senior Coach Programme.
